Trailer Security That Slows a Thief Down

An unattended trailer is one of the quickest things to steal — unhitched, coupled to another vehicle and away, often in under a minute. Our trailer and towing range is built to make that take long enough to be worth abandoning.

The core of it is a hitch lock on the coupling and a wheel clamp on at least one wheel, so the trailer can be neither towed nor rolled. Beyond that we stock king pin locks for HGV semi-trailers, van and lorry door locks, container and trailer door locks, and anti-snake stabilisers for lighter outfits. Bulldog covers most of the range, with SAS and Fullstop Security filling in the specialist fittings.

Couplings vary far more than people expect, and a hitch lock that does not match the coupling will not fit. Tell us the make and model of yours and we will tell you which locks suit it.

Does an anti-snake stabiliser add any security?

Not on its own. A stabiliser is a towing aid – it damps the side-to-side movement that causes snaking at speed. Some models take a lock, which is where the two overlap, but fitting a stabiliser is not a substitute for a hitch lock.

Can I use a car wheel clamp on a trailer?

Not reliably. Trailer wheels are often smaller and narrower than car wheels, so a clamp sized for a car may not close properly, or may foul the mudguard. Check the tyre sidewall figures against the clamp’s stated range before ordering – our sizing guide covers it.

How do I know which hitch lock fits my trailer?

By the coupling, not the trailer. Couplings vary far more than people expect – AL-KO alone has several models, and other makers differ again. Find the make and model stamped on the coupling head, tell us what it says, and we will tell you which locks suit it.

What is a king pin lock and when do I need one?

It blocks the fifth-wheel coupling on an HGV semi-trailer so the trailer cannot be picked up by another tractor unit. It does the same job at commercial scale that a hitch lock does on a small trailer, and it is the usual first fitting for anything left standing in a yard. See our commercial vehicle locks.

What should I fit to a trailer left on site overnight?

At minimum a hitch or king pin lock and a wheel clamp, so it can be neither towed nor rolled. On a site with no gate or lighting, a ground anchor and chain through the chassis adds a third fixing that has to be cut rather than picked.

Are door locks worth fitting to a box trailer?

If there is anything in it, yes. A trailer can be perfectly secure against being towed and still be emptied where it stands. Container and trailer door locks cover the doors themselves, and are the usual pairing with a hitch lock on a box or plant trailer.
