Wheel Clamp Sizing Guide

Choosing the right wheel clamp comes down to tyre size, tyre width, wheel type and vehicle use. Do not choose on vehicle type alone. A caravan, trailer, van or car may need a different clamp depending on the tyre size, wheel trim and whether the wheel is steel or alloy.

Start by checking the tyre size printed on the tyre sidewall, such as 155/70 R12, 185/70 R13 or 195/55 R10. Where a chart uses D and W, D means the overall tyre diameter and W means the tyre width, including any trim. The Auto Clamp chart, for example, sizes models by both tyre diameter and tyre width.

For cars, caravans, vans and motorhomes, the Auto Clamp range is a good starting point. The CC100 is listed for cars and caravans, the CAT for trailers and caravans with steel wheels and no trim, and the DC400 for motorhomes and vans. The Euro Clamp range is another option where tyre width is the main sizing factor, with models covering smaller wheels through to larger 4×4, van and truck tyres.

For trailers and caravans, check the QD and TrailClamp ranges carefully. QD clamps are matched to specific tyre sizes and wheel types, including alloy wheels, steel wheels, trims and no-trim applications. TrailClamps are also tyre-size specific, but they are not suitable for alloy wheels.

For heavy-duty trailer tyres, measure the tyre width rather than relying only on the printed tyre size. For example, the QD chart notes that normal 155/70 R12 tyres may be 155 mm wide, while heavy-duty versions can measure around 170 mm wide. In that case, the TC250 TrailClamp is the better match.

For caravans, cars and trailers where wheel trim shape matters, check the Titan range. Titan clamps have fixed-width arms, so the model must match the tyre size and trim type. The chart separates no-trim wheels, flat trims, alloy wheels, bulbous trims and low wheel arches.

For quad bikes, ATVs and UTVs, use the Centaur charts. These are sized by ATV-style tyre markings, such as 22 x 8.00, 24 x 10.00 or 26 x 9.00, as well as by tyre diameter and width on larger Centaur models.

Before ordering, check:

  1. The tyre size printed on the sidewall.
  2. The tyre diameter and width if the chart uses D and W.
  3. Whether the wheel is steel or alloy.
  4. Whether the wheel has no trim, a flat trim, a bulbous trim or a low wheel arch.
  5. Whether the clamp protects the wheel nuts correctly.

Simply Secure Direct presents wheel clamps as part of its Bulldog vehicle security range and highlights a dedicated wheel clamp sizing guide for helping customers match clamps to tyre sizes and wheel types.

The safest choice is the clamp that matches the exact tyre size, suits the wheel type, fits around any trim or arch restriction, and gives proper wheel nut protection.
