Does a detached garage need different security from an attached one?
Usually more of it, rather than different. A detached garage is out of earshot, often unlit, and can be worked on for longer without anyone noticing – so the case for a second fixing inside, as well as a solid door lock, is stronger. Ask us if you are not sure where to start.
What about vehicles and trailers parked outside the garage?
A driveway post is the usual answer – it physically blocks the space, so nothing can be driven or towed off it. Removable and fold-down types let you use the drive normally the rest of the time. See security posts and bollards.
How do I stop an outdoor lock seizing up?
Keep the barrel lubricated and the moving parts clean. Locks fitted outside take rain, road salt and grit all year, and most that stop working have simply never been maintained. Protectant sprays and greases are in accessories and spares.
Which lock suits my type of garage door?
It depends on how the door moves. Up-and-over doors usually take a lock that pins the door to its frame at the side; roller shutters need one that stops the curtain being lifted; sectional doors differ again. Tell us the door type and we will match it from our garage security range.
My garage has no power and no alarm – what helps most?
Physical locks, because they work without power and are visible from outside. A good door lock plus a ground anchor and chain for whatever is inside covers most of it, and neither needs wiring, a signal or a battery.
Can I secure tools and equipment inside the garage as well as the door?
Yes, and it is worth treating as a separate job. An anchor bolted to the floor means getting through the door is not the end of it, which is often enough for a thief to move on. Eye locks and tool locks cover the smaller kit.
