Driveway Security Posts: Which Type Do You Need?

A security post is a highly visible way to stop vehicles being driven on or off your property, or to protect a parking space. There are four main types, and the right one depends on how often you need to move it and how it will be installed.

Telescopic posts

Telescopic posts retract into the ground when not in use. They are available in several heights (580mm, 670mm and 850mm), in round or square profiles, and in galvanised, powder-coated or stainless steel finishes. Lift-assist versions are also available, which help take the weight when raising the post.

Telescopic posts are a good fit for driveways and entrances you open and close every day.

Fold-down posts

Fold-down posts are surface mounted, so they bolt to an existing surface without digging. The Bulldog GA80, for example, stands 710mm high when upright and folds down to 90mm when flat. The SAS heavy-duty folding post places the lock near the top, so you do not need to crouch down to operate it.

These suit parking spaces, driveways and forecourts where you want a quick installation.

Removable posts

Removable posts lock into a ground socket and lift out completely when you need access. The Bulldog SA5 comes with a ground socket and a cover plate for when the post is not in use, and is designed for securing parked cars and caravans. Bulldog notes that some insurance companies offer a discount when a security post is fitted, so it is worth asking your insurer.

Fixed posts

Fixed posts stay in place permanently, either concreted in or bolted down. They are best where access is never needed, such as restricting vehicle access to driveways and public areas.

Posts for caravans and trailers

Hitch posts are designed so you can hitch a caravan or trailer to the post and lock it in place with a hitch lock. The Bulldog SA7 Hitch Post is compatible with all types of hitch, including stabiliser types. For trailers and horseboxes, the Bulldog TP200 T Post passes through the A-frame of the chassis and locks into the ground.

Before you install

Check what is under the surface before digging or drilling, and consider whether you need the post to be removed regularly. If you are unsure which type suits your space, call 01952 740308.
