Security Chains and Padlocks: Avoiding the Weak Link
A security chain is a simple way to tie something valuable to a fixed point. But a chain, padlock and anchor work as one system, and a thief will always attack the weakest part. This guide covers how to choose a chain and padlock that suit each other and the job.
Chain thickness
Chain thickness is one of the clearest indicators of how much protection a chain gives. Our range runs from light everyday chains to heavy high-security sets:
- 6mm: the multi-purpose chain and UB50 padlock, light and easy to carry for low-risk use.
- 10mm: heavy-duty square shackle chains, a mid-range choice for trailers, caravans, motorbikes and machinery.
- 13mm: the Bulldog MC55 high-grade alloy chain, supplied with an 85mm steel block padlock.
- 14mm: case-hardened heavy-duty chain, available with the Sold Secure Gold Monster padlock.
- 16mm: the Nemesis chain, made from chromoly steel links.
Choosing a padlock
The padlock is often the part that gets overlooked. A thick chain secured with a light padlock gives a thief an easy target. Look at:
- Shackle thickness and type. Closed shackle padlocks protect more of the shackle from cutting tools.
- Material. Brass padlocks are suited to everyday use. For higher-risk jobs, choose a hardened steel body and shackle.
- Rating. The Nemesis 16mm D padlock and Monster closed shackle padlock are both Sold Secure Gold. The Federal FD730 is Sold Secure Silver.
Check that the padlock shackle fits through your chain links and around your anchor. The HD43 padlock, for example, has a 12.7mm case-hardened shackle designed for use with a chain and ground anchor.
Ready-made sets
If you would rather not match components yourself, several sets come with a suitable padlock:
- Heavy-duty 10mm chain and padlock, in 1500mm and 2000mm lengths.
- Heavy-duty 14mm chain with the Monster padlock.
- The Bulldog MC30, which includes a chain, padlock and ground anchor, for motorbikes, quad bikes and lawn mowers.
Cables for lighter jobs
Steel braided cables are flexible and easy to loop through awkward shapes, such as bike frames or garden machinery. The 12mm cables are available on their own or with a padlock.
Fix it to something solid
A chain is only useful if it is locked to something that cannot be moved. Our ground anchor guide explains the options for different surfaces.
