Ground Anchors: How to Choose the Right One
A chain is only as secure as the thing it is locked to. A ground anchor gives you a fixed point to chain a trailer, caravan, motorbike or piece of equipment to, so it cannot simply be lifted or wheeled away. The right anchor depends mainly on the surface you are fixing it to.
Screw-in anchors for soft ground
If you need an anchor point on grass or soil, a screw-in anchor is the practical choice. Our range includes:
- A 400mm deep corkscrew-style anchor made from 16mm steel bar, with a stated holding power of 325kg.
- A 500mm deep heavy-duty auger-style anchor.
The auger-style anchor is designed so that, once it is chained tightly, it cannot be unscrewed.
Bolt-down anchors for concrete and walls
On an existing concrete drive, garage floor or wall, a bolt-down anchor is the simplest option. Several in our range are Sold Secure Gold approved, including:
- The Oxford RotaForce rotating ground anchor, supplied with four high-security fixings.
- The PJB Red Alert Double Bridge anchor.
- The PJB Bull Point anchor.
- The PJB Taurus Bull Ring anchor.
For smaller items such as scooters and bicycles, the PJB BruteForce Mini Anchor is Sold Secure Silver approved.
Concrete-in anchors for new installations
If you are laying a new base or are happy to dig one in, a concrete-in anchor sits below the surface with only the ring showing. The Oxford TerraForce and the PJB Taurus Bull Ring built-in anchor are both Sold Secure Gold approved.
Wall anchors
Where floor fixing is not practical, a wall anchor gives you a fixed point at height. The PJB Untouchable Hook Wall Anchor is available on its own, with a lock, or as a kit with a 2000mm x 14mm chain.
Fixings matter too
An anchor is only as strong as its fixings. Replacement shield anchor bolt fixing kits are available, including versions supplied with security balls.
Choosing a chain and padlock to go with it
Your anchor, chain and padlock should be a matched set, so one weak component does not undo the others. Our guide to security chains and padlocks explains what to look for.
